London Subsidy Rolls 1593-1600: Cautions
The information on this web-site must be used with care!
-
Genealogists may find information on this website useful in many ways: they
must understand, however, that so far as I am concerned this is simply a
list of names. Some day I hope to identify certain individuals more completely;
until then, genealogists are likely to know much more about particular
individuals than I.
-
If you wish to cite, no written permission is required
from the PRO or from me, but please acknowledge both.
-
Transcriptions vary greatly in reliability from
document to document and sometimes from place to place within a particular
document.
-
My transcriptions are not complete: in particular, they do not (yet)
include notations - including "Affid" for "Affidavit" which indicates
that an individual did not pay, or "Ex" for "Exoneratur" and "Certif"
for "Certificatur" which indicate that an individual was exempted
from the obligation to pay. Nor do they include sums. Nor do they
include the actual amount of the tax (an amount which in any case can
be worked out independently).
-
The only way to be absolutely certain of a particular entry
is to check the original in the PRO.
-
If the chore does not become too burdensome, I am happy to let an individual
user inspect my digital photograph of a given section of a given membrane.
Please contact me by email (see below).
This will avoid the need to visit the PRO in person, and will reduce
wear-and-tear on the originals.
However, I reserve the right to refuse to cooperate, particularly if
any demand is excessive or unreasonable in my own judgment.
-
My indexes are not complete, since I have deleted from the index
many references where
the last name in particular is not immediately legible.
-
Since my indexes are generated by a computer program (of my own devising),
they are likely to perpetuate my transcription errors.
-
I intend (and reserve the right) to make changes, corrections, and improvements
at any time, without notification.
I would appreciate suggestions and corrections as I develop this site:
